What is dengue fever?
Aedes
Aedes aegypti. Aedes aegypti, the yellow fever mosquito, is a mosquito that can spread dengue fever, chikungunya, Zika fever, Mayaro and yellow fever viruses, and other disease agents.
Dengue fever is a highly febrile viral disease. The viruses are transmitted to humans through mosquitoes. Main distribution areas are the tropics and subtropics. However, the disease also occurs in other regions and affects around 50 million people every year.
Typical contagion countries are for example Thailand, India, Indonesia or Brazil. In addition, the pathogens of the dengue fever meanwhile, but much less common, could reach the human body via mosquito bites in southern Europe as well. For example, the virus was detected in travelers in southern France and Croatia for the first time in 2010.
At present, experts estimate that about 10 out of 100,000 tourists get dengue fever. At the same time, the number of illnesses appears to be steadily increasing. In this country in 2009 nearly 300 people, while in 2010 over 380 and in 2016 even 1,029 cases were transmitted. Overall, dengue fever is considered the most common viral disease travelers bring from the tropics.
How can you get dengue fever?
Dengue viruses (DENV) cause dengue fever, of which four different types (subgroups or serotypes) are known. The viruses can enter the human body via bites of certain mosquitoes.
These mosquitoes are found in both urban and rural areas. They are active mainly during the day and at dusk. Even the smallest accumulations of water are sufficient for them as a breeding ground, with high temperatures lead to a strong and rapid increase.
Especially children and adolescents in so-called endemic areas - these are areas in which the dengue fever is located - often suffer seriously, if they are infected again with another type of dengue virus.
Europeans usually become infected during a holiday in corresponding areas. The blood-sucking mosquitoes harbor the pathogens that reach the human body during the sting and multiply there. After three to 14 days, usually after four to seven days, it can come to the onset of the disease.
Different courses are possible, ranging from mild symptoms over the classic course to life-threatening clinical pictures.
